The Centre for Digital Philosophy, in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, is seeking a Software Developer. In this role, you will work in collaboration with colleagues in the Centre for Digital Philosophy (CDP) to support the maintenance of existing online services operated by the CDP,

providing second level technical support for the various online applications. You will define, develop, test, analyze, and maintain software applications that address the CDP's strategic needs, contributing to all aspects and stages of the development of new online tools and services to be used in research and education in philosophy.

As the ideal candidate, you will have a two (2)-year Community College Diploma in an information technology field or an Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or related field (preferred). You will have one (1) year of experience in software development. Specific technology experience that we are looking for, and would be an asset to the role, include:

  • Experience in object-oriented programming in Ruby/Rails, Perl, Java (with Spring and Hibernate), or Groovy/Grails with MySQL
  • Experience with other programming languages and frameworks (e.g. Python)
  • Experience with high-traffic, distributed web deployments, including software such as ElasticSearch, Memcached, and RabbitMQ

The Centre for Digital Philosophy (CDP)'s mission is to advance research and education in philosophy through technology. The main goal of the CDP is to facilitate research in Philosophy using online tools. The CDP maintains an integrated suite of online tools and services that are widely used by philosophers, students and other stakeholders, including PhilPapers (a comprehensive index of the literature in philosophy), PhilEvents (a calendar of academic events and calls for papers in philosophy around the world), PhilJobs (a comprehensive, international database of jobs in philosophy) and PhilSurvey (a project currently in the planning phase which will provide a comprehensive census of the professional opinions of philosophers on all key questions in the field). The CDP also conducts Big Data research into the nature and evolution of philosophical debates.
