Join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team responsible for the delivery of preliminary and detail design plans, design reports, contract drawings and tender packages for the construction and rehabilitation of the province's transportation infrastructure.

About the job

In this role, you will:

  • investigate design alternatives and prepare designs on selected route locations and other Ministry infrastructure
  • assist in the production of design projects for transportation systems by interpreting data and determining extent of design work, preparing contract documentation and preparing correspondence and reports
  • make highway design recommendations related to such elements as horizontal and vertical alignment layouts, etc.
  • carry out detailed design drainage studies
  • use computer software to prepare roadway designs and related plans
  • assist in preparing final contract and tender documents
  • calculate quantities and cost estimates
  • support senior designers and project management staff in reviewing corridor management issues
  • prepare presentation materials

What you bring to the team

Technical knowledge and skills:

  • You have knowledge of highway planning and design principles and procedures.
  • You have knowledge of contract estimating, preparation of preliminary and final contract plans and documents, specifications, special provisions and standards, and variations permitted.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

  • You work well with others to fully participate in the design team.
  • You are able to liaise with other offices and stakeholders.
  • You can prepare a variety of reports, documents and correspondence.

Analytical and problem solving skills:

  • You can solve problems by addressing design issues.
  • You can investigate design alternatives and analyze technical problems.
  • You are able to analyze data to determine geometric designs and the development of designs.

Computer skills:

  • You have the ability to utilize software related to the highway planning and design process (such as AutoCad , GIS, Highway Costing System, Contract Preparation Systems, In-Roads, etc.) to prepare preliminary design and detail design contract packages for highway design work.
  • You can use standard word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.
