Principal Engineer, Database Platform (MySQL)
About the role
Shopify’s mission is to make commerce better for everyone. Our Database Platform team provides Shopify with the foundational technologies the company uses to build our products.
As Shopify scales to build new features and onboard new merchants, our product needs efficient and scalable distributed databases. This allows Shopify to provide most merchant and customer impact, while guarding the integrity of the data. To succeed at this challenge, we need a solid database platform to store, manage and serve the source of truth for our applications.
The Databases group in Infrastructure is seeking a skilled Principal Engineer to help evolve such a platform and collaborate closely across Shopify in shaping the future of an event driven mission. We manage thousands of MySQL databases as the source of truth for Shopify. As we grow, we also improve the tooling in order to reduce the manual toil, and improve resiliency and performance.
Responsibilities:
Independently propose, champion, drive clarity and simplicity on projects with Shopify wide impact
Proficiently evolve all aspects of a Database stack, including our MySQL and Vitess installations
Collaborate with other principal engineers and tech leads to set and drive technical strategy and roadmap towards unified datastores strategy at Shopify
Stay updated on the latest database technologies and patterns and apply those learnings back to our goals
Mentor and coach engineers, take part in shaping culture to build a healthy and impactful team
What you bring to the team:
Strong communication and collaboration skills
You have demonstrated Industry/Company wide impact using MySQL (Percona) and related database technologies
Championed and delivered on complex technical projects touching many engineering teams that led to measurable impact
Collaborated with staff-level leads across multiple teams, building trust, influencing direction, and fostering collaboration
Experience working with and influencing open source community and/or cloud vendors
Ability to dive into the codebase to influence by prototyping and building
