At SMS Equipment, our Service Estimator is responsible for analyzing and assessing project requirements, estimate costs, and provide accurate quotes for heavy equipment repairs, enhancements, and maintenance work. This position is in Edmonton, AB.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $110,000.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for heavy equipment service work, including repairs, enhancements, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Perform detailed cost analysis to determine labor, material, and equipment costs associated with the service work.
  • Develop and maintain a budget for each project, considering all relevant factors, to ensure profitability and achieve financial objectives.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, market demands, and cost-saving techniques related to heavy equipment service work.
  • Maintain accurate records of estimated costs and contracts. Prepare reports for management and stakeholders summarizing estimations, project progress, and any cost deviations.
  • Participate in regular team meetings, both formal and informal, to facilitate the exchange of information, updates, and ideas.
  • Create and regularly update platforms, such as internal forums or shared databases, where branch operations teams can exchange resources, insights, and best practices. Encourage active participation and contributions from all teams.
  • Conduct periodic visits to branches.
  • Enter relevant quote details into the database, ensuring the data is accurately recorded and organized in a clear and systematic manner for easy retrieval and analysis.
  • Regularly review the database to identify patterns or trends in successful estimates.
  • Share findings and observations from the database, utilizing tools such as Power BI. Analyze the data and provide to operations, the corporate service analyst group and marketing group.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks to keep the database up to date and relevant.
  • Regularly review and validate the accuracy of the information and remove any outdated or redundant data.
  • Incorporate new information from successful estimates to continuously enhance the database's effectiveness as a resource for future quoting activities.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years experience as a Service Estimator within the heavy equipment/automotive/agricultural industry and proven experience in quoting and estimating heavy equipment service work, with a track record of accurately predicting costs and timelines. Additional requirements include:

  • Familiarity with a wide range of heavy equipment types, such as construction machinery, agricultural equipment, or industrial machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when performing estimations and documentation.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills to effectively interact with internal stakeholders. Ability to clearly explain estimation rationale, respond to queries, and negotiate terms to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines without compromising accuracy and quality.
  • Proficiency in using estimation software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, to create and manage estimates, budgets, and reports.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of heavy equipment service industry practices, regulations, and safety guidelines.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies and industry trends that may impact the estimation process.
  • Heavy Equipment Technician and/or Parts Technician certification is an asset.
