Job details
About Spin Hobby Spin Hobby is a hobby shop in Western Canada for anime figures, collectibles and pre-orders. We are a small team that builds its own software instead of renting someone else’s: our storefront, our inventory systems and our pre-order tracking are written in-house, and we are building an automated product-photography pipeline that turns phone photos into clean, consistent, honest listing photos. We treat retail as an engineering problem. Collectors need accurate listings, true stock levels and pre-orders they can follow from reservation to delivery. Getting that right takes careful data, testing and a lot of small, practical decisions, and that is the work. About the role We are looking for a Software Engineer Intern to work directly with the people who run the shop and write the code. This is a small team, so you will not be a ticket-taker in a queue: you will own real pieces of a live system and see customers use what you build. What you will work on Back-end services and APIs that power the storefront, inventory and pre-order tracking. Keeping inventory and orders correct across the systems a retailer depends on, including the data that moves between them. Admin and staff tools that save the shop hours: bulk edits, reporting, cleaner data entry. Reliability and performance: writing tests, finding why something is slow or wrong, and fixing it properly. The image-processing tools behind our product photography: how photos are cleaned up, checked and published. The technology We work mainly in TypeScript, with NestJS on the back end, React on the front end and PostgreSQL for data. You do not need to know all of it. You do need to be comfortable learning a real codebase, reading code that other people wrote, and asking good questions. What you will learn How a production system behaves when real customers, real inventory and real deadlines are involved. Writing code that is tested, reviewed and safe to change. Working from a business problem to a design, not just from a specification to code. How a small team ships, deploys and looks after software. What we are looking for Required Studying, or recently completed, a degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. A solid grounding in the fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and how programs and networks behave. Hands-on experience building a back-end or web project: APIs, a database, and the glue between them. Coursework and personal projects count. Comfort with at least one modern language; experience with TypeScript or JavaScript is a plus. You debug methodically and you care whether the data is right. Clear written and spoken communication; you can explain a technical problem to someone who is not an engineer. Nice to have Experience with SQL, REST APIs, automated testing or Git workflows beyond the basics. A project you built and can walk us through, even a small one. An interest in collectibles, anime, hobby retail or small-business operations. What we offer Real production work with mentoring from the people who built the system. A short feedback loop: your code ships, and you see the result in the shop. [Duration and start date, for example “4 months, starting [date]; flexible for co-op terms.”] Practical details Location: remote across Canada Hours: 60 hours. Eligibility: Currently enrolled as full-time student at accredited post-secondary school in Canada. To apply: send your resume and a link to a project, repository or short write-up of something you built or debugged. Tell us, in a few sentences, about a problem you solved and what you learned from it. We read every application. Spin Hobby is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and will work with you on any accommodation you need during the hiring process.
