About the role
- You’ll be part of the Designbase team — the design systems arm of Homebase’s EPDD org. Your immediate collaborators are a Senior Design Engineer, a Design Systems Lead Designer, plus a design manager
- Together, the three of you are the engine behind a component library that 10+ designers, 10+ PMs, and 120+ engineers across Homebase depend on every day
- Homebase is an AI-first company. That means we use AI to move faster and work smarter — not as a novelty. Expect to work in a team that actively experiments with new tools and shares what works
- Designbase is the foundation that every product team at Homebase builds on
- As a Design Engineer on the Designbase team, you’ll join a tight-knit systems crew — pairing with our existing Design Engineer and Design Systems lead designer — to close the gap between what designers imagine and what engineers ship, at scale, across web and native app surfaces
- You are a builder. Your craft lives in the component library, but isn’t always limited there. You’ll co-own Storybook alongside your engineering counterpart — building net-new components, maintaining and evolving what exists, and making sure every implementation reflects the design intent in Figma with precision
- Critically, this spans both web and native (Swift, Kotlin, React Native) — you’re comfortable thinking in both and know where they share logic and where they diverge. The work the three of you do multiplies across every product team at Homebase
- One sprint, you’re shipping a new form component and writing its usage documentation
- Next, you’re pairing with your fellow Design Engineer on a gnarly React Native state issue. Then you’re in Figma with the Design Systems Lead, pressure-testing a new pattern before it gets built. The team is small, and the leverage is enormous
- Build and evolve components end-to-end - Own the lifecycle from Figma review to production-ready component to documentation. Proactively identify edge cases, reduce design gaps, and ensure consistency as the system grows
- Build across native and web platforms - Develop and maintain components across React Native (iOS/Android) and React (web), understanding where patterns can be shared and where platform-specific solutions are required
- Write documentation that engineers actually use - Create clear usage guidelines, prop tables, accessibility notes, and do/don’t examples. Treat documentation as part of the component, not an afterthought
- Leverage AI as a force multiplier - Use AI tools to scaffold components, generate tests, draft documentation, and explore design patterns faster. Bring a clear, practical workflow for how AI accelerates your output
- Advocate for accessibility - Build components that meet WCAG 2.1 AA and platform accessibility standards by default, catching issues early in the system layer
- Own and evolve design token architecture - Define and maintain how tokens flow from Figma to code across web and native, ensuring a scalable, consistent single source of truth
- Support cross-team adoption - Partner with engineers across the org to unblock implementation, review PRs, and make the design system intuitive and easy to use correctly

- MasterClass at Work for ongoing learning- This role is for someone who thrives in a collaborative systems environment, is obsessed with quality at the component level, and gets genuinely excited about the infrastructure that makes everyone else’s work better
- Strong communication and testing practices - You write clear documentation and implement robust testing (React Testing Library, Jest, visual regression tools)
- Design token architecture experience - You’ve worked with token systems across platforms and have clear opinions on structure, tooling, and a single source of truth
- Cross-platform expertise (React Native, Swift, Kotlin) - You understand platform differences (layout, gestures, conventions) and design with them, not against them
- AI proficiency in workflows - You actively use AI to improve development speed, quality, and team workflows, with concrete examples of impact
- Accessibility knowledge - Experience building accessible components (WCAG 2.1 AA, iOS/Android standards) from the ground up
- 4–7 years of experience in frontend, UX engineering, or design engineering, with meaningful time in design systems. You can move fluidly between Figma and production code
- Strong Figma fluency - You understand tokens, auto-layout, and component systems, and how design decisions translate into scalable code
- If you’re excited about this role, even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply!
