Manager Operations Technology

About the role

The position is accountable for OT strategy, governance, lifecycle management, and technical leadership of BluEarth’s OT environment. The role leads a multidisciplinary team responsible for supporting production systems while delivering initiatives that improve operational visibility, reliability, maintainability, cybersecurity, and long-term business value. 

While responsible for leading the Operations Technology team, the position remains actively involved in technical problem solving, investigations and troubleshooting, architecture decisions, and OT strategy. The successful candidate must be comfortable balancing people leadership responsibilities with hands-on participation in complex technical initiatives and operational support activities. 

Key Responsibilities 

Leadership & Team Development 

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the Operations Technology team, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and technical excellence. 

  • Establish team priorities, objectives, workload allocation, and development plans while balancing operational support, project delivery, lifecycle management, and strategic initiatives. 

  • Promote technical excellence through knowledge sharing, documentation, performance management, professional development, succession planning, and recruitment. 

  • Remain actively engaged in technical leadership activities, including architecture and design reviews, troubleshooting, standards development, major incident response, and strategic technology planning. 

Technical Leadership, Operational Support & Reliability 

  • Provide technical leadership and support for complex OT issues involving local and enterprise platforms, operational data and reporting systems, infrastructure, and communication networks. 

  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for OT incidents, system failures, integration issues, data quality concerns, and recurring technical problems, leading investigation, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions. 

  • Support Operations teams in restoring service and resolving OT issues remotely, with onsite presence as required. 

  • Establish and maintain support processes, documentation standards, and operational documentation that support reliable system operation. 

Governance, Standards, & Architecture 

  • Establish and maintain consistent fleet-wide standards, reference architectures and technical specifications for SCADA systems and infrastructure, communication networks, cybersecurity, and operational data and reporting systems. 

  • Lead governance processes related to configuration management, change management, documentation, lifecycle planning, and risk management. 

  • Evaluate and guide technology selection, architecture decisions, and design approaches to ensure OT systems remain supportable, maintainable, secure and aligned with fleet standards. 

  • Ensure OT systems are designed, maintained, and supported in accordance with operational, compliance, cybersecurity, and business requirements. 

  • Promote standardization, continuous improvement, compliance, cybersecurity, and long-term sustainability across OT platforms, processes, and support models. 

Operational Technology, Projects, & Business Systems 

  • Provide technical leadership for SCADA, operational data, reporting, historian, communication, and remote operations centre systems, ensuring they provide accurate, reliable, and timely information to support operational decision-making, investigations, reporting, and compliance activities. 

  • Develop and maintain technology roadmaps that improve operational visibility, reliability, maintainability, cybersecurity, and lifecycle sustainability, while identifying opportunities to improve system integration, data quality, alarm management, monitoring tools, dashboards, and reporting capabilities. 

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for OT initiatives supporting development, construction, acquisitions, integrations, lifecycle replacements, modernization programs, and fleet improvement projects. 

  • Review and contribute to technical specifications, system architectures, design packages, testing plans, commissioning activities, operational readiness reviews, and system handover requirements while collaborating with Asset Management, Operations, Engineering, and Business Systems teams to support operational and business objectives. 

  • Manage relationships with OT vendors, system integrators, contractors, equipment manufacturers, telecommunications providers, and third-party service partners, supporting vendor selection, technical reviews, budgeting activities, and project execution to ensure solutions remain practical, supportable, and aligned with BluEarth standards, operational requirements, and long-term objectives. 

Education 

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, automation/controls engineering, or a related technical discipline. 

Experience 

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience supporting, designing, implementing, maintaining, or leading OT, SCADA, industrial automation systems in power generation, utilities, industrial automation, or similar critical infrastructure environments. 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams while remaining actively engaged in technical delivery, engineering reviews, troubleshooting, and technical decision-making. 

  • Background developing technical standards, governance processes, system architectures, and fleet-wide technology initiatives. 

  • Familiarity with operational technology systems within renewable energy, power generation, utilities, industrial automation environments. 

  • Exposure to NERC, ARS, CIP, cybersecurity, compliance programs, or regulated operational environments is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, establish technical direction, and evaluate technology solutions. 

  • Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills with the capacity to balance operational support, project delivery, strategic initiatives, and lifecycle planning. 

  • Proven leadership, coaching, team development, and stakeholder management skills. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
