MARKETING & DIGITAL GROWTH DIVISION

PURPOSE SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager of Digital Design and Development, the Web Designer will work with other Marketing & Digital Growth team members to design and maintain Compassion Canada’s web presence. The Web Designer is expected to be well versed in using prototyping and development tools, design systems, and modern web design styling languages to ensure Compassion Canada’s web properties are up to date, created with excellence and support a thrilling, engaging experience for all who visit.

WHAT YOU DO MATTERS

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design engaging and responsive campaign pages and web product features for Compassion Canada web properties.
  • Support the broader M&DG team, when necessary, in UI and UX optimizations of existing web pages and products.
  • Translate project scoping documents into wireframes, low-fi, and hi-fi visual designs.
  • Working alongside the Brand and Product Experience team – ensure brand and design consistency, refine requirements, and propose solutions to UI/UX difficulties.
  • Participate in the co-ordination, setup, and review of any/all web-based testing.
  • Enhance and maintain design systems (components, tokens, patterns) to ensure brand consistency and to improve maintainability across sites and products.

WHO YOU ARE MATTERS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Experience with the latest HTML and CSS standards including modern CSS approaches like CSS Grid, Flexbox, and Custom Properties. LESS and SASS familiarity is an asset.
  • Familiarity with implementing and reviewing using the Tailwind CSS Framework.
  • Experience with responsive design, including full cross-browser and cross-platform testing practices.
  • Proficiency in developing for mobile environments.
  • Experience with Figma or other similar platforms (Sketch/Penpot).
  • Self-directed with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience and familiarity with reporting on project status and working with a project manager.
  • Understanding of adaptive or responsive web design best practices.
  • Understanding of a variety of User Interface (UI) methodologies and user experience (UX) best practices, including an ability and desire to work according to UX data and standards and not exclusively design according to “what looks best.”
  • Clear understanding of the ever-changing web design space.
  • Experience and knowledge in design thinking methodologies, evidenced by continuous learning and certifications.
  • Experience and education in user-centered design evidenced by continuous learning and certifications.
  • Knowledge of Design system token management and compilation tools, such as TokensBrücke or Terrazzo.
  • Knowledge of Design System component implementation using technologies including but not limited to React.js and PHP.

WHAT YOU BRING MATTERS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of (3) three years of professional experience in web design, front-end development, or a related field is required.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing responsive web properties, including landing pages, and mobile-optimized experiences is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in HTML5, CSS3, SASS or LESS, JavaScript, and related frameworks such as jQuery or React.js is required.
  • Experience in UI/UX design methodologies and user-centered design, including responsive and adaptive design best practices is required.
  • Experience collaborating within creative or cross-functional teams and reporting project status to leadership or stakeholders is required.
  • Proficiency with design tools including Figma, Tailwind CSS, TokensBrücke, Terrazzo, or equivalent programs and frameworks is an asset.
  • Experience with PHP for WordPress-related development is an asset.
  • Diploma or degree in graphic design, interactive multimedia design, web development, or a related field is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay current with web design trends, emerging technologies, and design thinking methodologies is preferred.
  • Proven ability to translate complex requirements into visually engaging, accessible, and technically sound digital experiences is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This role is primarily remote, with staff classified as Remote Workplace Staff or Hybrid Workplace Staff depending on their distance to the Compassion Canada office.
  • Staff are expected to maintain a dedicated home workspace suitable for web design, coding, and digital collaboration.
  • Extended screen time is expected daily, requiring sustained focus on design, development, and testing activities.
  • The role requires regular use of multiple systems and software applications simultaneously, including CMS platforms, design tools, and project management software.
  • Staff must adhere to quality standards, accessibility requirements, and responsive design best practices across all web properties.
  • Shift flexibility may be required to meet project deadlines or collaborate across time zones.
  • Overtime may be required during project launches, peak campaigns, or website maintenance periods.
  • Staff are expected to engage in virtual team meetings, training sessions, and organizational gatherings, prioritizing digital participation.
  • Collaboration and communication with internal teams, stakeholders, and external vendors or contractors are required to ensure high-quality digital experiences.
  • Adaptability is required to respond to rapid technological changes, design updates, and project requirements.
  • Travel is generally not required but may be requested for team or organizational events.
  • Staff must be able to maintain productivity and technical accuracy in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, remote work environment.
