Course Information

In this course, students develop and refine their knowledge of teaching vocal music at the intermediate and senior levels. Students will learn about vocal technique, choral pedagogy, repertoire, score study, and choral conducting; including decolonized approaches to pedagogy and vocal technique that honours diverse traditions. This course includes teaching improvisation in the classroom and engagement with music technology.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Music Education, Music, Curriculum Studies, or a closely related field.

  • Familiarity with Ontario Arts Curriculum (Grades 1-8, 9-10, 11-12) and demonstrated experience and success teaching Music at the Intermediate/Senior level; and/or in studio or community contexts.

  • Knowledge of contemporary vocal pedagogy and decolonized approaches to vocal/choral music.

  • Significant choral conducting experience and experience with planning and executing choral performances.

  • Ability to confidently lead students through creative, improvisatory, and critical analysis activities.

  • Knowledge of assessment & evaluation, differentiated instruction, and inclusive vocal/choral music education practices in the Intermediate/Senior Music classroom.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or within the last five years.
  • OCT Specialist Qualification in Music or equivalent academic/professional expertise.
  • Collaborative experience with multi-disciplinary arts teams.
  • A record of effective teaching performance in post-secondary education (particularly teacher education), and/or Additional Qualifications (AQ courses), and/or facilitating teacher professional learning (e.g., through arts professional associations).
  • Active in research related to arts education.
