The AMA is recruiting for the position of Application Architect. As a member of the Information Systems Group department, the Application Architect will play a critical role in ensuring that AMA initiatives are supported through the planning, architecture, design, development, maintenance, and support of software products for the organization.

The AMA has a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will be based out of our Edmonton or Calgary office and will have the opportunity to work from home but will be required to go into the office or attend in person when required. Travel throughout Alberta will be required irregularly.

Team Overview

The Information Systems Group (ISG) department is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s information system needs. This includes hardware/software support, management of the corporate network, remote access to the network, internet services, information security, disaster recovery, application development and numerous knowledge management initiatives.

Position Overview

Provides technical and architectural expertise for the design, development and evolution of enterprise information systems. The role connects business needs with information architecture and modern application development by shaping technology roadmaps, leading solution design and delivery, and leveraging emerging technologies. It also provides technical direction and guidance to ensure systems are scalable, user centered and aligned with organizational strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Articulate roadmaps that bridge legacy and future state architecture, applications, and technologies in collaboration with the Manager (Application Development) and other business stakeholders.
  • Investigate and learn new technologies and apply them to ISG initiatives as applicable.
  • Work closely with the Manager (Application Development) to ensure that schedules are met, and priorities are assigned and understood.
  • Identify technologies, methodologies, frameworks and approaches for transitioning information systems to a web-based standard.
  • Design interactive solutions through the use of low and high-fidelity wireframes, site flow diagrams, technical requirements documentation, metrics, and user stories.
  • Enhance information architecture team accomplishments and competence by planning delivery of solutions; answering technical and procedural questions for less experienced team members; teaching improved processes; mentoring team members.
  • Leading the design and development reports, screens, processes, etc. using Microsoft .NET technologies and new web and mobile technologies
  • Adhere to and expand ISG’s development methodologies, practices and documentation standards.
  • Facilitate project meetings with the business users/staff.
  • Perform business process analysis tasks that require working closely with staff to gather requirements and review/document internal business processes.

Education and Experience

  • 5 - 9 years of progressively responsible application development experience, including work in Agile delivery environments and experience supporting cloud-based application platforms, enterprise systems, and content managed solutions.

Skills

  • 5+ years of professional experience in web application development.
  • Strong expertise in C# and .NET / ASP.NET Core.
  • Hands‑on experience with Umbraco CMS (v8+ preferred).
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL Server, including query tuning and data modeling.
  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, authentication, and authorization.
  • Experience with Git and modern source control workflows.
  • Experience with Azure (App Services, SQL Azure, DevOps, etc.).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure‑as‑code.
  • Knowledge of React, Angular, and JQuery.
  • Previous experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Knowledgeable in the principles of architectural patterns, service-oriented computing, and contractual / interface-based design.
  • Proven track record or demonstrable knowledge required to develop scalable, highly available, enterprise class solutions for mobile and desktop.
  • Able to effectively communicate to key stakeholders and developers using formal modeling languages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; team orientation.
  • Ability to conduct research, multi-task, judge and prioritize tasks.
