About the role
Who you are
- Experienced engineering leader (8–10+ years in engineering, 3+ years managing senior and staff engineers)
- Deep backend engineering expertise, you have a strong foundation in building and scaling backend systems, and you can credibly engage with your engineers on architecture, performance, and design trade-offs
- Breadth across the stack, you've led teams delivering across multiple product lines and paradigms: from synchronous API services (Java/Spring Boot) to batch and event-driven ETL pipelines (Python/Airflow), and you know how to apply the right tool for each problem
- Operational excellence and incident management, you hold a high bar for system reliability and on-call hygiene, drive blameless post-mortems, and ensure your team can detect, respond to, and learn from incidents quickly
- Hands-on AI-first mindset: you embrace AI/ML to improve team velocity, drive automation, and reduce manual review rates
- Strong ownership mentality, you thrive in ambiguity and take full responsibility for outcomes
- Comfortable engaging directly with enterprise customers and compliance officers, translating technical decisions into clear narratives for non-technical stakeholders
- Excellent communicator who can lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders at all levels
- Nice-To-Haves
- Deep understanding of identity verification, AML/BSA compliance, and regulatory obligations in the financial services or fintech space
- Experience integrating with identity verification vendors (e.g., Trulioo, LexisNexis, Socure, Alloy) or sanctions screening providers
- Background in fintech issuing platforms, core banking, or payments operations
- Prior ownership of KYC/KYB automation initiatives that materially reduced manual review rates or compliance risk
- Familiarity with AML/BSA regulatory obligations, OFAC screening, FinCEN CIP rules, or Red Flag program requirements
What the job involves
- Own the end-to-end identity verification lifecycle, from one-time CIP checks at account opening through ongoing CDD and continuous customer risk monitoring, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance at every stage
- Build and operate systems that enforce KYC obligations across the full framework: identity verification (CIP), risk-based due diligence (CDD), and event-driven re-verification as customer risk profiles evolve
- Drive AI-first automation, reducing manual review rates and increasing efficiency across KYC/KYB decisioning, sanction screening, and Red Flag rule evaluation
- Lead and mentor a high-performing engineering team, improving velocity and system reliability through intelligent workflows and automation
- Act as the technical and business-facing leader in customer and regulatory escalations, translating complex compliance scenarios into scalable platform improvements
- Partner cross-functionally with Risk, Compliance, Product, Operations, and Legal to shape the platform roadmap and identity verification strategy
- What Success looks like
- The engineering team is engaged, growing, and operating at high velocity — engineers feel ownership, have clear career paths, and are proud of what they ship
- KYC/KYB onboarding decisions consistently meet compliance requirements and customer-facing SLAs, with a reliable, auditable platform that earns trust from customers and regulators alike
- Manual identity review rates are materially reduced through AI-driven decisioning workflows, freeing the team to focus on higher-leverage problems
- The Identity platform is architected to be extensible — enabling Marqeta to expand into new markets with different regulatory frameworks (e.g., new jurisdictions, AML regimes, or licensing requirements) without requiring a platform rebuild
- Customers and regulators view Marqeta as trusted, expert partners in identity and compliance
