Low Latency Pub/Sub SRE Role Description The Messaging and Pub/Sub Fleet within Institutional Securities Technology provides world-class shared services for Messaging and Publish/Subscribe technologies, ensuring security, scalability, resiliency, data durability and availability, enabling application teams to focus on business delivery. You will be joining a global SRE team providing expert-level support for a sophisticated content-based pub/sub messaging system used in high throughput and low latency real-time messaging applications delivering dynamically-filtered streaming data APIs, scalable event-driven architecture, and real-time GUIs. It is used by itself as well as a complement to industry standard queuing (i.e. MQ) and streaming pub/sub (i.e. Kafka) middleware to offer a fast and filtered state of the world and http-based streaming. Our current shared platform offers immense scale across thousands of unique deployments but we are building a platform with a focus on infrastructure as code, DevOps automation, and deployment to both classic and cloud compute. As a middleware platform SRE, you will be responsible for interacting with a diverse group of business-facing technologists providing best practice support along the entire lifecycle across architecture, configuration, reliability, performance and production support for both the middleware product and self-service platform. The successful candidate will be involved in day-to-day handling of change, incidents, escalations, problem management, and reliability engineering focused on automating change and incident detection and platform enhancement. This includes application server administration, technical troubleshooting of infrastructure and user incidents, creating and updating documentation, working on eliminating toil, and working with the middleware development team to engineer low-touch blueprints for health checks, observability dashboards, and alerting for business-aligned production management teams. The position requires on-call coverage outside business hours one week a month. The hours will be adjusted within the team to accommodate for the extended coverage. Major Role & Responsibilities - Level 3 production management of the Firm's internally built and developed pub-sub data messaging plant. This includes implementing observability, creating actionable alerts incident management, high-touch request fulfillment, problem management, and change management. - Improving operational processes and automation by proactively identifying, analyzing, and improving processes and tools. Opportunistically eliminate toil and adopt automated approach to change management. - Deep-diving into complex troubleshooting at architectural, software, and system levels, planning and implementing changes, and serving as an escalation point for production management generalists. - Work in a global environment in a team that has members across regions and provide 24/7 support in a follow the sun manner and participate in the team's on-call rotation for out of hours support and change management. - Creating and maintaining best practices and policies and ensuring their implementation. - Work closely with the internal engineering teams and business-facing key stake holders to develop, plan, and execute changes while managing risk. - Participate in the weekly review meetings and actively engage with various engineering teams to review the infrastructure. Required Technical Skills - Experience comparable to DevOps SRE providing SME-level application or platform support with responsibility for designing and automating operational procedures and best practices - Experience writing python and shell scripts to perform health checks and automations - Experience with Linux System Administration (preferably Red Hat) - Hands-on experience with multi-tenant hosting environments for middleware applications (for example: centrally managed platform or infrastructure as a service) - Experience with implementing observability, monitoring and alerting tools - Excellent written and oral English communication skills. The candidate must write user-facing documentation, prepare and deliver presentations to an internal audience and effectively interact with upper management, colleagues, and customers - Independent problem-solving skills, self-motivated, and a mindset for taking ownership - A minimum of 5 years of infrastructure production support or DevOps experience Additional Technical Skills - Experience with broker-based messaging infrastructure such as Apache Kafka, IBM MQ (or similar technology like ActiveMQ, Azure Service Bus) including configuration and performance tuning - Experience with public/private cloud and containerization technologies (e.g. Kubernetes) - Experience with Agile development methodology, CI/CD and automated build pipelines - Experience with DevOps methodology (e.g. Phoenix Project) - Experience with tools such as Jira, Confluence and ServiceNow - Experience working with JSON, XML, Google Protocol Buffers, Avro, FIX - Experience with troubleshooting tools such as TCPdump and Wireshark - Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Redis - Interest and understanding of emerging IT trends - Experience with system architecture design WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM MORGAN STANLEY: At Morgan Stanley, we raise, manage and allocate capital for our clients – helping them reach their goals.
