In this role, you will contribute to the design, sustainability, and advancement of the City’s Corporate Geospatial Data Repository—a critical platform supporting dozens of enterprise systems and thousands of users across more than 30 City divisions. Your work will play a direct role in enabling better decision-making, enhancing service delivery, and driving innovation across the organization. Major Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities as a Senior Spatial Specialist (Database Platform and Solutions Specialist) include, but are not limited to:
Coordinates, designs, develops, implements, configures, sustains, documents and reviews geospatial information systems. Provides day to day support of geospatial information initiatives including unit and integration testing, documentation, installation, support and archival of project environments. Undertakes quality reviews for geospatial solutions and information assets. Participates in design and evaluation sessions of spatial data structures and spatially enabled applications with objectives to promote integration with existing geospatial information assets and tools and to ensure adherence to standards. Assists business units in selecting and implementing appropriate geospatial technology and procedures to best serve their needs by researching and recommending viable options. Reviews current applications and "off the shelf" software products and makes recommendations for usage. Analyzes business and Information Technology issues as they pertain to the use of geospatial information and technology. Provides integration options as appropriate. Transfers geospatial technology knowledge to groups well versed in the field and to groups new to the field. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of both the current and planned GIS platforms and development environments. Maintains an up to date understanding of City information and technology platforms and applies this understanding to enhance geospatial information and technology usage for various business units. Promotes geospatial information and technology through presentations and/or written descriptions to groups with varying levels of technical expertise. Participates in geospatial information and technology project teams as requested and provides advice to team members.
Key Qualifications: Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
Post-secondary Degree in Information Technology, Geographic Information Systems, Geomatics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and progressive professional experience Extensive experience in SQL database development, including schema design, performance tuning, and PL/SQL, particularly with Oracle databases and Oracle Spatial. Extensive experience developing and implementing system automation and integration solutions using Python, HTML5, JavaScript, and PL/SQL. Extensive experience developing and supporting solutions within the Esri technology stack, including ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Online (AGOL), in complex enterprise environments that require high availability and scalability. Experience with database administration and installation, including the ability to develop and troubleshoot Unix/Linux shell scripts (e.g., Bash, KSH, or SH) to automate system processes and operational tasks.
You must also have:
Ability to assess business and complex technical requirements, develop effective, scalable, and cost-conscious solutions, and clearly articulate their value to diverse stakeholders within a broader enterprise application landscape. Knowledge of database security best practices and compliance standards, including data protection, access controls, and secure data management within an enterprise environment. Proven effectiveness in teamwork, facilitation, communication, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and team leadership across projects, assignments, and service engagements. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Strong software development discipline, including the use of source code control and adherence to system development life cycle methodologies. Experience with PostgreSQL and PostGIS is considered an asset. Ability to work flexible hours including days, afternoons, nights and weekends, as required. Ability to be on call for support of production systems, as required. Ability to travel across various office locations within the City of Toronto, as required.
