The Opportunity

As a Manager Data Platforms, you will lead the day-to-day development, operations, and continuous improvement of the enterprise data platform including lakehouses, pipelines, dataflows, and semantic models across Alberta Innovates, InnoTech Alberta, and C-FER Technologies. Working within the strategic direction set by the Director, Data and Analytics, the Manager translates organizational data priorities into platform capabilities, ensuring high-quality, trusted data products are reliably delivered to support analytics, reporting, and data-driven initiatives. The role leads a technical team responsible for platform engineering, data integration, reporting, and solution delivery, and partners with cross-functional stakeholders to execute the data platform roadmap.

By aligning data products and solutions with organizational priorities, the manager will ensure that data-driven initiatives support critical business objectives across Alberta Innovates, InnoTech Alberta, and C-FER Technologies. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to create scalable, ethical, and high-performance AI architectures, while also driving the creation of proof of concepts (POCs) to validate new technologies. Ultimately, this position plays a pivotal role in fostering data literacy, promoting data access, and harnessing advanced analytics to meet the organization's evolving needs.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for duties that will include:

Data Platform Management

  • Leads the day-to-day development, operations, and continuous improvement of the enterprise data platform including lakehouses, pipelines, dataflows, and semantic models.
  • Manage platform configuration, capacity planning, workspace governance, environment strategy (dev/test/prod), and user access controls.
  • Monitor platform health and performance, resolving incidents and coordinating with Microsoft support as required.
  • Maintain and evolve the enterprise reference architecture, ensuring all workloads conform to established patterns and security requirements.
  • Evaluate and select technologies, tools, and frameworks to enhance platform capabilities and performance
  • Lead the transition toward repeatable deployment practices, including CI/CD pipelines and automation where applicable.

Data Integration and Pipeline Management

  • Oversee the ingestion of enterprise and business data sources into Fabric, following approved ingestion patterns and onboarding criteria.
  • Ensure data pipelines are reliable, monitored, and aligned to established error handling, lineage, and security standards.
  • Spearhead integration of disparate data sources, applications, and databases to create a unified data ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to implement secure and efficient data APIs and connectors for data exchange.
  • Develop and maintain data integration frameworks, including guidelines for data exchange, transformation, and synchronization.
  • Coordinate with source system owners to clarify integration responsibilities and downstream consumption requirements.

Data Reporting, Dashboards and Data Products

  • Lead the team in development and maintenance of dashboards, reports, and data products aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Collaborate with business units to identify KPIs, metrics, and reporting requirements that address critical business needs.
  • Oversee integration of data from multiple sources into comprehensive, centralized reporting outputs.
  • Partner with the Data Governance Manager to ensure data products leverage certified (gold) datasets from the Data Catalogue.
  • Support the infrastructure that enables self-service reporting for business developers, in coordination with governance-defined standards.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

  • Design scalable AI and LLM architectures for optimal performance and integration with existing platform infrastructure.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and continuously improve AI model performance, aligning outputs with business goals.
  • Promote innovation in AI-driven analytics, automation, and forecasting to support organizational priorities.

Leadership

  • Provide leadership to the data platform team: set clear goals, monitor performance, and drive professional development.
  • Offer ongoing feedback, mentorship, and training to build team capability and high performance.
  • Working within the budget parameters established by the Director.
  • Manage projects and vendor/contract obligations.
  • Define project scopes, objectives, and successful criteria for platform development and integration initiatives.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders across Alberta Innovates, InnoTech Alberta, and C-FER Technologies.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies, practice standards, and change management processes.

Qualifications and Skills

Required

  • Diploma in computer science, computer systems technology, Information technology, or related discipline.
  • Minium 10 years in-depth Information Technology experience in progressively more responsible positions; including 4 years’ experience in application integration.
  • Minimum 1 year leadership/management experience of a team
  • Experience implementing cloud-based services, technologies, and platforms.
  • Experience working in a professional Microsoft environment.
  • Digital transformation experience, focused on process improvements within the business.

  • Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203)
  • AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)
  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)

Preferred

  • Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300).
  • Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104).
  • Broad knowledge of IT architecture tools and methods.
  • Knowledge of portfolio management, program management, and project management.
  • Solid foundation in system analysis and design, and application development and programming (SDLC).
  • In-depth knowledge of packaged systems and how they integrate into the business, processes required to choose a provider and implement the solution.
  • Ability to communicate complex architectural and security concepts in plain language.
  • Strong planning, priority management, and time management skills.
  • Ability to extract business needs and functional requirements to implement appropriate technologies and programs.
  • Capable of influencing others, creating buy-in, and maintaining high customer satisfaction and trust.
  • Proven ability to work with business unit leaders to gain an understanding of where the business is going, build plans to support them getting there.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously while ensuring partnerships remain intact.
  • Excellent verbal, written, listening, and interpersonal skills.
