Job details
Overview Join the team that powers the world’s productivity! Excel is more than a spreadsheet. It is a global platform relied on by millions of people every day, from students and scientists to business leaders and innovators. As we embark on the next chapter of intelligent agentic experiences, you have the opportunity to help shape the future of how people work, analyze, and create with Excel. The Excel Agent team’s mission is to make expert-level Excel capabilities available to everyone. People describe what they need in plain language, and the agent works in their workbook to help accomplish the task. It understands workbook context and user intent, plans and completes multi-step tasks using Excel capabilities, and checks its results before reporting back. We are building an agent people can trust with real work, one that brings in the right context, supports repeatable processes, and delivers results that remain editable and easy to verify. As a Software Engineer II on the Excel Agent team, you will help design, build, and ship features that combine Excel’s core capabilities with agentic AI. You will own feature implementation, testing, and production support with minimal guidance while contributing to technical designs with support from more experienced engineers. You will work across client and service components and gain experience building reliable AI-powered experiences at scale. This position is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. We are a welcoming and supportive team that values inclusive decision-making, feedback, and shared success. We use AI throughout our engineering processes while maintaining accountability for the quality and reliability of our work. We use prototypes and experiments to test ideas and use data and customer feedback to inform our decisions. We are looking for engineers who can work effectively in a dynamic environment, learn new technologies and systems, and collaborate with others to deliver reliable customer experiences. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond. Responsibilities Implement and maintain AI-powered features and agentic workflows that help the agent understand workbook context and user intent, owning feature delivery with minimal guidance. Contribute to feature and technical designs, evaluating performance, scalability, reliability, security, and cost considerations with guidance from experienced engineers. Develop and execute feature test strategies, including unit, integration, regression, security, and AI evaluation tests. Use telemetry and evaluation results to help confirm that features work reliably and meet defined quality expectations. Monitor feature performance and iterate based on data and customer feedback, using established practices such as feature flags, success and guardrail metrics, safe rollouts, and rollback mechanisms. Use AI-assisted development tools in a disciplined manner to support engineering productivity and code quality, reviewing, validating, and taking responsibility for AI-generated code, tests, and other engineering artifacts. Collaborate with Product, Design, Applied Science, engineering, security, and privacy partners to understand user needs and develop features that meet applicable security, privacy, responsible AI, and accessibility requirements. Participate as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI)/on-call engineer for features you own by monitoring service health, mitigating incidents using established playbooks and least-privilege access, escalating when appropriate, and contributing to root-cause fixes and improvements. Deliver tested, secure, and maintainable code across client and service components, using shared components and established engineering patterns where appropriate. Contribute to deployment automation, monitoring, telemetry, troubleshooting documentation, and other engineering practices that improve the reliability and maintainability of the product. Learn the codebase, tools, technologies, and engineering practices needed for your area and share relevant knowledge and best practices with the team.
