Manager, Data Centre and Infrastructure Applications

Band 12: $91,792 - $122,390

Durham College is seeking a Manager, Data Centre and Infrastructure Applications to provide shared ICT (Information and Communication Technology) services to the unique campus communities of both Durham College and OntarioTech University. This includes servers, the data centre and applications that tie into the infrastructure functions such as Active Directory, email, etc.

Reporting to the Director, ICT Infrastructure, the Manager plays a key role in the defining the strategic roadmap for the data centre and infrastructure applications ensuring core-systems scalability, reliability, high availability and adequate security. This role is also responsible for managing multiple projects and ensuring successful outcomes. The Manager oversees the data centre and infrastructure applications operations, ensuring a high-availability of services and that services are quickly restored after any outages.

The Manager provides leadership to the data centre and infrastructure applications team to build a high-performance organization, and ensures that adequate service levels are maintained for IT infrastructure-related services. The incumbent will apply relevant approaches and processes from best-practice frameworks such as ITIL, etc. The Manager will be responsible for the IT infrastructure budget and supplier management.  


  1. A minimum of a four-year degree in Computer Science (or related field) is required.
  2. One or more advanced technology certifications (such as a networking certification) are highly desirable. The incumbent should also be able demonstrate that they have kept their skills and knowledge up to date through professional activities and/or additional formal training.
  3. A basic ITIL certification is desirable. Any other professional certification is an asset.
  4. A minimum of nine (9) years work experience providing IT infrastructure services in an enterprise environment.
  5. A minimum of three (3) years of management experience is required, including budgeting, leading strategy, and managing and delivering complex IT infrastructure projects on tight schedules. Managing in a unionized environment is an asset.
  6. A broad knowledge and understanding of current information and communication technologies and their relation to the higher education business and academic strategic objectives.
  7. In-depth knowledge of: server hardware and operating systems, Windows and UNIX, disc and tape sub­systems, and corporate services such as e-mail and directory services; advanced system administration practices; and server security, best practices in running a data centre, cloud-based approaches, relevant ITIL processes.
  8. Proficient with the following industry technologies: Server Operating Systems, Email Systems, VMWare ESX, Enterprise Storage Technologies, Active Directory, Systems Management, Enterprise Security Best Practices, Systems Integration, Security monitoring systems.
  9. Experience with cloud technologies and cloud migrations.
  10. Experience or exposure to PCI compliance and/or PCI secure environments.
  11. A good knowledge of networks protocols and Wi-Fi.
  12. Understanding and experience with RFP and other processes for acquiring technology.
  13. A good knowledge of applicable building, fire and safety codes is required.
  14. Good project management skills to manage multiple projects at a time.
  15. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to articulate the college's roadmap of technology, gain understanding of complex technical issues, or to seek agreement on sensitive issues that may involve budget, human resources, conflict resolution, or project deliverables.
  16. High level negotiating skills to secure the best contracts with vendors and partners.
  17. Keep abreast of the latest advances in Information Technology to ensure that the college and university are serviced by the most cost-effective hardware, software and services available in the marketplace
  18. Familiarity with various desktop applications to prepare reports, budgets, project plans, and presentations.
