Within the City of Hamilton's complex, public sector environment, with multiple sites and stakeholders, information security plays a pivotal role in our ability to deliver the services Hamilton residents, businesses and visitors have come to expect – making this position with our Information Technology (IT) Division an exciting and rewarding career opportunity.

Reporting to the Manager, IT Security, you'll design, develop, review and manage security for all data, information, network and infrastructure systems across the IS landscape, and direct the full life cycle of network and application security management. As an integral part of IS projects and operations, you'll provide insight, advice and leadership for the development and implementation of security policies, procedures and measures that ensure secure and reliable information systems across the corporation that are in compliance with existing data/information privacy laws and regulations.

By continually researching, and staying current with, emerging technologies, security trends and tools, security architectures and changes in the IT landscape, including trends in software viruses and other attack/malware, you'll be better equipped to provide current, relevant advice and guidance to the IS and business divisions of the City. You'll also be able to prepare communications and instructions to the City's user community on new security and virus threats, including procedures to follow if infected.

As an Information Security Analyst, you may be assigned to one or more projects as a project team member and/or a project lead and, as such, will provide coaching on security process and methods to other IS staff.


The following profile makes you uniquely qualified for the role of Information Security Analyst:

  • University degree or college diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Technology or a related discipline.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of combined IT infrastructure/network and security experience.
  • Working knowledge and experience in systems analysis, applications development, and database design and administration.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of client/server, network topology and network/infrastructure security.
  • Strong knowledge of, and experience developing and implementing, information security processes.
  • Working knowledge and experience in network traffic analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability in configuring and maintaining anti-virus software, firewalls and intrusion detection systems.
  • Strong knowledge of vulnerability management technologies, system and network monitoring, SIEM.
  • Knowledge of network and infrastructure security issues, techniques and implications across multiple computer platforms and environments.
  • Strong knowledge of legislative requirements for security and privacy and recognized IT Security frameworks.
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management principles.
  • Experience in client and web-based application development and user support environments, including experience working with client and web-based applications technology, preferably in a municipal environment.
  • Understanding of one or more standard computer programming and scripting languages commonly used in business applications (e.g. Python, Powershell,)
  • Knowledge of ITIL standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven leadership, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to make sound and logical judgments.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • A valid Class G Driver's Licence.

NOTE 1: This position currently requires the incumbent to use their personal vehicle 3 or more times per week for City business. In accordance with the City policy, parking is provided at this time. Should this job requirement change, parking will only be provided in accordance with the City policy in force at that time.

NOTE 2: As a condition of employment, the successful applicant will be required to obtain, satisfactory to the City of Hamilton, a Criminal Records & Judicial Matters (CRJM) Check at their own expense prior to beginning work in this position.

This permanent, full-time position offers a salary range of $44.057 to $51.526 per hour (based on a 35-hour work week schedule).
