The Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is one of two branches of Government responsible for the wholesale distribution and retail sale of beverage alcohol and non-medical cannabis. In 2018/19 the LDB recorded gross sales of $3.6 billion, generating a net income of $1.104 billion that supported vital public services including health care and education. It has a workforce of approximately 4600 full- and part-time employees working across 197 BC Liquor Stores, two BC Cannabis Stores (online and stand alone), a Head Office, three Wholesale Customer Centres and three Distribution Centres. The LDB is led by a General Manager and CEO who is responsible for administering the Liquor Distribution Act and the Cannabis Distribution Act, subject to direction from the Minister. As part of BC’s mixed-model retail system for liquor and non-medical cannabis, the LDB is committed to providing customers with an enhanced shopping environment, an expansive product selection and a high level of service.

LDB’s Information Technology Division (IT) provides reliable, responsive and secure systems and services to support LDB in operational excellence and delivering superior customer service.

The LDB’s Information Technology Division consists of six departments and 23 distinctive units, with 200+ FTEs. IT has adopted a multi-sourcing strategy and leverages a combination of internal and external expertise, including outsourced services, contracted services and shared services, to deliver the IT mandate of supporting current operations and future business needs. Strategic plans, governance of standards and risk management are all developed internally to support Divisional and Corporate goals.

Reporting to the Manager, Enterprise Computing, this position is responsible for providing systems and server support to the Liquor Distribution Branch’s (LDB) Intel-based Windows and Linux servers and associated Virtualization Technologies and Storage Technologies, including investigating, trouble-shooting, performing root-cause analysis and resolutions; installing, testing, maintaining and upgrading system/server software/hardware/firmware; monitoring systems server activity and usage and performing data analysis to ensure operational health of systems/servers are able to meet business demands, engage in performance tuning to maximize operational effectiveness and efficiencies for all environments including the PCI-compliant environments. Provide technical expertise, direction and service essential to the planning, development, implementation, operation and maintenance of the LDB Servers and Storage area network environments used at all LDB Head Office, Distribution and retail locations.

The Server Administrator works in a highly dynamic, challenging and results-oriented environment with constant technology changes.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Information Technology or related field with a minimum of 3 years recent experience as a Server Administrator in a comparable environment OR Diploma in Information Technology or related field with a minimum of 5 years recent experience as a Server Administrator in a comparable environment
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Experience as a Server Administrator must include:

  • Experience in working in a large corporate environment supporting Windows/Unix (Redhat Enterprise Linux and/or HPUX) servers, Virtualization Technology and SAN
  • Demonstrated ability to trouble-shoot and resolve technical issues
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, judgment and consensus building abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and produce results within deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team, where productive relationships are developed and maintained

Knowledge:

  • In depth knowledge of Server administration/System Engineer in Unix and Microsoft Windows
  • Working knowledge of VMWare products and experience with virtualization design and support
  • Working knowledge of SAN technology such as IBM/HP 3PAR/NetAPP
  • Knowledge of computer networking and communications protocols
  • Knowledge of system services such as E-mail/SMTP, web services, SNMP, Active Directory/LDAP, Group Policy, etc.


Preference may be given to those candidates with:

  • Experience with and/or knowledge of Retail and Payment System
  • MS Windows certification
  • VMWare certification
  • Citrix VDI certification
  • Redhat Enterprise Linux certification
  • HP-UX experience (PA-RISC., Itanium)
  • SAN product experience (IBM, HP 3PAR)
