The Burnaby School District is one of the largest, most progressive and diverse urban districts in the province.  The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, plus a number of additional facilities.  The District enrolls 24,000 students (K-12) and employs 4,000 dedicated employees who are committed to providing all students with a wide variety of innovative, high-quality programs to ensure student achievement in areas that include academics, athletics, trades training, visual and performing arts, social responsibility and leadership. The District also provides lifelong learning opportunities to more than 16,000 adult learners through an established Community & Continuing Education Program.

The Burnaby School District is seeking an experienced Manager to join its Information Technology team.  The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the security of, and access to, all information technology systems and data within the District. The Manager of Network and Security will also lead in developing, monitoring, and implementing IT infrastructure within the Information Technology department and associated technology resources and services. As well, this position will be highly involved in large projects from start to completion.  

A Network and Security Manager in Burnaby:

  • Provide support to students, teachers, and district staff in ensuring network operations and security information systems are efficient, reliable and secure;
  • Provides leadership in supporting IT infrastructure, Security and Authentication Services, and Network Services;
  • Responsible for the overall network infrastructure, both LAN and WAN, and the teams that support the strategic and operational work in these areas;
  • Implements security improvements by assessing current environment; evaluating trends; anticipating requirements;
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; ongoing training and reviewing publications;
  • Assists in the scheduling and status of projects and ensures that the project and department goals and objectives are being met and the expected levels of quality are being achieved; 
  • Maintains and supports a departmental culture of continuous improvement, service orientation and process-based methodologies.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Degree in the Information Technology field, and current industry certification in at least one of the following: Information Technology, Project Management, Network Security, and Service Management;
  • Minimum five years of progressive responsibility and demonstrated success in developing, implementing, administering and maintaining an IT infrastructure and related information security, preferably in an educational institution;
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with Local, Wide and Metro Area Network design and implementation as well as extensive knowledge and experience with current networking environments;
  • Advanced knowledge working with Microsoft O365/Azure;
  • Possess relevant Cisco, CompTIA, ITIL, COBIT5, VMWare, and Microsoft certifications;
  • Experience with HPE/Aruba hardware/software, Microsoft server operating systems; VMWare; CommVault software; Nimble SAN hardware; Microsoft Windows; Apple OSX;
  • Expertise with TCP/IP, DHCP/DNS, Extranet/VPN/Firewall/PPTP/IPSEC, Layer 2/3 design;
  • Expertise with routers/switches, wireless systems, Cisco, HPE/Aruba, and Palo Alto equipment;
  • Positive interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to develop teams and foster an environment which promotes teamwork;
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with all internal and external contacts;
  • Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others;
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage technical staff and to maintain service level agreements;
  • A proven history to keep abreast of new technologies and to continually upgrade and develop information technology skills and knowledge;
  • Valid class 5 British Columbia driver's license.

This position works in an office environment, requiring some travel to various work locations within Burnaby.   Regular office hours are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.  Additional hours or time outside of the normal office hours may be necessary based on operational requirements.
