How does this role contribute to our collective success? We are seeking a skilled Data Engineer to join our dynamic Data & Analytics team, within the Platforms & Transformation group. The Data Engineer will use their technical, analytical and insurance expertise while working as part of project teams to deliver the benefits to AXIS. This is an excellent opportunity to work within great teams across the business on complex, challenging and rewarding projects and initiatives to build towards the success of AXIS. What will you do in this role? Data Analysis & Modelling: Work with the business teams, including senior leaders, to define the data products and use cases along with their data lineage, critical data elements, data glossaries and data quality rules. Work with the Data Architecture team to enable the design of best-in-class current state and future state data flow diagrams Partner with the Data Insights and AI & Innovation teams to design the outputs and workflows for Use Cases and Data Products. Use your industry experience to define the metrics required for projects and solutions. Lead the QA testing of data products and supporting the business teams during UAT. Support the future phases of data products you have delivered in projects once live where you are considered a subject matter expert and have a relationship with the business teams. Data Engineering: Run simple and complex queries to understand existing data structures and relationships, data quality gaps and metric formulas to enable accurate documentation of the current state solutions. Use your advanced Excel skills to reverse engineer complex workbooks with macros and layered formulas to enable modular redesign in our modern data architecture. Build and execute test models against both on-premises SQL Server and Azure Databricks databases. Work closely with the development teams to ensure your data product templates are clearly defined to the specifications required by the application delivery leads. You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role. About You: We encourage you to bring your own experience and expertise to the table, so while there are some qualifications and experiences, we need you to have, we are open to discussing how your individual knowledge might lend itself to fulfilling this role and help us achieve our goals. What you need to have: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related technical field (or equivalent work experience). 4+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar data-focused role. Very strong SQL and Excel experience Design experience with star schemas and delta concepts Experience in data modelling in Excel having worked within Data Governance and Data Quality frameworks Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to understanding data quality issues and challenges Experience with large complex projects delivering data products and use cases Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment. Ability to time manage and work across different priorities. What we prefer you to have: Insurance industry experience. Microsoft SQL Server and Azure Databricks experience Ability to read programming languages Knowledge of Insurance KPIs and metrics and processing within Underwriting, Claims and Pricing Experience taking a key role on Data & Analytics projects Role Factors: In this role, you will typically be required to: This position is a hybrid role and will require mandatory in office presence 3 days per week. What we offer: For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $75,000 - $120,000 CAD (Nova Scotia). Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
